Spencer Carbery coaching career

Carbery started out his coaching career back in 2010 when he joined the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays coaching staff. During that time, he had just announced his retirement from hockey. He briefly served as head coach ahead of the 2011-12 season when head coach Cail MacLean took a new job in the AHL. He was just 29-years-old at that time and became the youngest head coach in the ECHL.

Later in 2016, Carbery left the Stingrays to serve as the head coach job with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit. The following year, he worked as one of the assistants for the AHL’s Providence Bruins. Carbery then returned to the Capitals’ system in 2018, to work as the head coach for the AHL’s Hershey Bears.

While at Hershey, Carbery led the team to the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy in 2021. He also led the team to become the AHL’s regular-season champion. He also won the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award for coach of the year. Carbery also oversaw the development of several young Capitals prospects that he could potentially have in the NHL this season. These players include Martin Fehervary, Aliaksei Protas, Connor McMichael, and Alex Alexeyev.
