Pretorius’ fluent stroke play and fearless intent came at a crucial moment, with South Africa reeling at 55 for four in the morning session. His counterattacking knock steadied the innings and shifted the momentum firmly in his team’s favor. By reaching fifty, Pretorius broke a long-standing record held by Graeme Pollock, becoming the youngest South African to register a Test half-century. Pollock had achieved the milestone at 19 years and 317 days back in 1964, while Pretorius reached it at 19 years and 93 days.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius was born on 27 March 2006, in Potchefstroom, South Africa and stands 5 feet 11 inches. He replaced Nitish Rana in the Rajasthan Royals squad for the IPL 2025 season after Rana was ruled out due to injury and joined the team at his base price of ₹30 lakh.
Lhuan-dre Pretorius’ father, Abe, is known for his dedication to fostering Lhuan-dre’s passion for cricket from a young age, even setting up a backyard net for practice. Lhuan-dre’s parents also played a role in his decision to move from St Stithians College to Cornwall Hill College in Pretoria. He also has a younger brother named Vihan.
A powerful left-hander and a natural stroke-maker, Pretorius had already built a strong reputation in South African domestic and youth cricket. He progressed through the country’s elite school system, spending most of his schooling at St Stithians before completing his final year at Cornwall Hill College in Pretoria. His performances at the 2023 ICC Under-19 World Cup made him South Africa’s top run-scorer in the tournament.
He was part of the national U-19 setup before finishing school and made his first-class debut for the Titans in 2023. He also impressed in white-ball cricket. In the 2023–24 CSA T20 Knockout Challenge, he finished as the sixth-highest run-scorer. In January 2025, he made his franchise T20 debut for the Paarl Royals and scored 97 runs in his very first appearance.
