Sourav Kumar Patra, a 26-year-old military officer, lived in Berhampur’s Gate Bazaar neighbourhood.
Sourav took a train to Visakhapatnam, from where he was expected to take a flight to Kochi to begin his duties as an acting leading communicator at INS Garuda, according to a complaint filed with Berhampur Town police on Tuesday by Saurabh’s uncle, Amulya Jena.
But he never made it to his job at INS Garuda. Ichchapuram was the last place his cell phone was recorded at before it was turned off. Family members who were worried tried to contact Saurabh at several locations and even inquired at the Naval base in Kochi, but they were unable to do so.
According to Sameer, Sourav’s brother, their mother and uncle sent the navy man off at the Berhampur railway station. He asked Indian Navy and police officials to step up their search for his brother.
The junior navy officer may have been abducted, the family fears. Since December 28, Saurabh aka Sourav, who enlisted in the Indian Navy in 2019, has been on leave at home.
He was working in the communication section at the Naval base in Kerala’s Kochi and had come home last month to attend a marriage ceremony, his brother Sameer said and Patra’s uncle Amulya Kumar Jena said the Navy official did not reach Kochi after leaving for a train to Visakhapatnam intending to catch a flight to Kochi.

IIC of Berhampur Town police station Soubhagya Swain said, “After receiving the complaint, we sent the navy officer’s photographs to various police stations. During investigation, it was found that his mobile phone was switched off at Ichchapuram railway station.”
On Wednesday, police gathered CCTV footage from the Ichchapuram, Andhra Pradesh train station. According to the CCTV video, Sourav who has been missing since Sunday exited the train and went outside the station and was seen leaving the premises in an autorickshaw.
According to a senior police officer, some of the military officer’s documents were found in the city’s Lanjipalli neighborhood. In addition, Saurabh’s personal tablet was discovered at his house. They’re looking at the device and the paperwork.
“CCTV footage showed the Navy official Sourav Kumar Patra stepping out of the train at the station and boarding an auto-rickshaw later,” the Inspector-in-Charge of Town Police Station, Berhampur, Soubhagya Swain, told PTI.
Investigation indicated that he might have returned to Berhampur and thereafter, left for Bhubaneswar in a bus, the police officer said, adding that his voter ID card was found from the over-bridge at Lanjipalli in the city.
