Sonam Wangchuk’s family and education
Sonam Wangchuk was born in 1964 to Col. Wangchuk who is a native of Khakshal, which is part of Leh in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. His mother is the sister of Mr. Thupstan Chhewang and the niece of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche.
His family shifted to Solan, Himachal Pradesh in 1969 when he was five years of age. Sonam studied at St. Luke’s till the fourth standard. Later on, in 1973, his family moved to Dharamshala where he studied at Sacred Heart High School. In early 1975, his father was transferred to Delhi, India.
Sonam is married to Padma Angmo.

Sonam Wangchuk professional career
Sonam Wangchuk attended Officers Training Academy based in Chennai and was commissioned in the 4th battalion of Assam Regiment as a Second Lieutenant. Sonam was posted to Ukrul in northeast India as a company commander and he later on worked in Sri Lanka as a part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force. He was posted to the Indus Wing of Ladakh Scouts.
In 1999, at the outbreak of the Kargil War, Major Wangchuk led an operation against the team Pakistani troops in Chorbat La pass on 31st of May which was the first successful operation of the war
He was honored with the Maha Vir Chakra after this operation. On the 21st of August in 2017, President Ram Nath Kovind released a documentary named “Lion of Ladakh” about the troops under Sonam Wangchuk who repelled enemy forces from Chorbat La. Son
