Nasro Abukar Ali is a Somalian national who recently went viral for her embarrassing performance in the ongoing FISU Summer World University Games in China. According to reports, she is the niece of a Somali sports official named Khadijo Aden Dahir. Nasro recently made a shocking performance in the women’s 100-meter race at the FISU Summer World University Games 2023. Abukar finished in last place with a time of 21.81 seconds, dubbed as the “slowest-ever” in an international event.

She finished 8 seconds slower than the second-last runner in front of her, and 10 seconds behind the winner. Upon further investigation, some reports state that she is a novice runner while some reports state that she is not a registered athlete and may not even be a runner at all.

The whole incident took place in the ongoing Summer World University Games at Chengdu, southwestern China. Following the shocking controversy around Ali, there are now major concerns regarding the selection process in Somalia.

Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia takes action

Following the controversy surrounding Nasro Abukar Ali, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia have started taking action. The ministry suspended Khadijo Aden Dahir, who is the chairwoman of the Somali Athletics Federation. They made the decision to suspend following allegations of:

The Ministry of Youth and Sports also revealed they have found no registered Somali University  Sports Association upon investigations. As such, there are high doubts on Ali’s legitimacy as a participant. The ministry has also stated that they will pursue legal action against the individuals responsible for falsifying the association and also against the Chairman of the Athletics Federation of Somalia.
