US soldier Andrew Eaves has been identified as the pilot of the Black Hawk helicopter that tragically collided mid-air with an American Airlines passenger plane

The crash ended up killing 67 people in total, including all the passengers from the plane and the helicopter.

According to army authorities, recovery operations are still underway with the National Transportation Safety Board conducting further investigations.

Andrew Eaves bio

Andrew Eaves was a US soldier and the pilot of the Black Hawk helicopter that recently collided mid-air with an American Airlines passenger plane. Eaves was a native of Noxubee County in Mississippi and he was married to his wife Carrie Eaves. The couple had one son and one daughter.

Eaves was from the small town of Brooksville in eastern Mississippi and his wife Carrie Eaves confirmed he was on the helicopter in a Facebook post Thursday.

Noxubee County native Andrew Eaves was among the military Blackhawk pilots who died in the crash and was a Central Academy graduate who grew up in the Brooksville area.

Eaves belonged to the 12th Aviation Battalion at Davison Army Airfield in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was taking part in a training operation when the helicopter struck the American Airlines aircraft. Following his tragic death, Carrie Eaves posted on Facebook:

We ask that you pray for our family and friends and for all the other families that are suffering today.”

Maj. Gen. Trevor J. Bredenkamp, who is the commander Joint Task Force-National Capital Region/U.S. Army also stated in his release:

Our deepest condolences go out to all the families and friends impacted during this tragedy, and we will support them through this difficult time.”

He added:

Our primary goal is to support the recovery operations while working closely with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and other investigating organizations to identify what caused this awful event.”

DC Plane crash

Just recently, an American Airlines Flight 5342 flying out from Wichita, Kansas, collided with a Blackhawk helicopter in midair while tyring to land. The incident took place just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. According to reports, the chopper was carrying three troops including the crew chief Ryan O’Hara, Chief Warrant Officer Andrew Eaves as the pilot and his trainee female co-pilot. Meanwhile, the passenger airliner that crashed into the Potomac River was carrying about 64 people.
