In 2014, Shaun and Elaine became engaged over the Christmas season. Elaine is a scientist who graduated from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2006 with a B. Sc. (Hons) in Chemistry. At the same college, she started a Ph.D. program in organic chemistry.
