The 14-year-old was hoping to make history this week by breaking Ronnie O’Sullivan’s long-standing record by becoming the youngest player to qualify for the World Championship at the Crucible but was denied a place in snooker history as he was narrowly defeated in the first round of World Championship qualifying at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

The Pole has been making waves on the snooker circuit, winning the U16 and U18 European Championship titles in March but the teenager really caught the eye by reaching the final of the open-age event, where he was beaten by 34-year-old Liam Highfield. However, the remarkable run was enough for Szubarczyk to be offered a two-year card on the World Snooker Tour.

Age 14 Michał Szubarczyk was born in Lublin, Poland on 12 January 2011. His father, Kamil, was a snooker coach and manager who first operated his own business before taking part-time jobs to support his son. His mother works at a bank. After watching the game together on TV, Michal became interested in it and, at the age of six, he began playing snooker with his father at a nearby club.

He enjoys playing chess and football as well. When he was twelve years old, he made his first snooker maximum break during practice. He balances his snooker training and student responsibilities by using home education rather than formal schooling.

He is the U21 World Snooker Champion & Bronze U17, European MEN Runner up, Bronze U19 Heyball WCh, U16 & U18 European Snooker Ch, Polish 6 REDS & Shootout Champion.

Michał Szubarczyk career

Michał Szubarczyk won the Polish national championships at the under-18 and under-21 levels when he was twelve years old. He advanced to the quarterfinals of the senior Polish snooker championships in January 2024 at the age of 13.  He won the Polish U-16 pool championship, the Polish junior championship in Snooker Shoot Out, and the Polish championship at six-red snooker.

At the age of 13, he defeated German Alexander Widau in the final of the IBSF World Under-21 Snooker Championship in Bengaluru, India, in August 2024. He was the tournament’s youngest winner ever. Earlier that week, he had lost in the under-17 semifinal.

He took home the EBSA European Under-18 Snooker Championship and the under-16 title in March 2025. He defeated veteran professional Harvey Chandler later that month to advance to the EBSA European Snooker Championship final. He lost to Liam Highfield, a former professional, in the final. His performance earned him a spot on the World Snooker Tour for the 2025–2026 season. He will be the youngest professional snooker player ever if he accepts the nomination.
