Who is SN Subrahmanyan?
Born on March 16, 1960, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Subrahmanyan is a civil engineering graduate from the Regional Engineering College in Kurukshetra. He later earned his MBA from the Symbiosis Institute of Business Management in Pune. Subrahmanyan began his career at L&T in 1984 as a Project Planning Engineer, where he quickly rose through the ranks, earning extensive mentorship from industry veterans. He later completed an Executive Management Program at the London Business School.
After taking on increasing responsibilities across various divisions, Subrahmanyan joined the L&T Board in 2011. His leadership led the company through several landmark projects, such as the Statue of Unity, the ITER, Offshore Platforms, and the Atal Setu bridge. Subrahmanyan ascended to the role of Chairman and Managing Director in October 2023, further cementing his influence within the company.
In addition to his role at L&T, Subrahmanyan is deeply involved in multiple industry initiatives. He is one of the founding members of the Climate Finance Leadership Initiative (CFLI) India and has served as the honorary chairperson of the National Institute of Technology – Rourkela’s Board of Governors. In 2021, he was appointed Chairman of the National Safety Council by the Union Ministry of Labor and Employment.

Subrahmanyan’s remarkable career has earned him numerous accolades. In 2024, the Engineering Council of India presented him with the Eminent Engineer Award. He was also ranked first in the Infrastructure and Engineering category of Business Today-PwC India’s Best CEOs list in 2022 and was featured on the cover of Fortune magazine’s October 2023 edition as India’s best CEO.
Subrahmanyan was appointed as CMD of the company with effect from October 1, 2023 and the CMD’s remuneration includes Rs 3.6 crore as base salary, Rs 1.67 crore as prerequisites and Rs 35.28 crore as commission and Chairman and managing director (CMD) SN Subrahmanyan of L&T took home a total salary of Rs 51 crore in 2023-24, 43.11% higher than the previous year.
