Who is Sloan Mattingly as video of girl trapped in Florida sand hole collapse goes viral, cause of death, obituary, bio, age and parents
On the afternoon of February 20, tragedy struck at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea beach in Florida when a sand hole collapsed, claiming the life of 7-year-old Sloan Mattingly from Indiana.
Sloan Mattingly and her 9-year-old brother, Maddox had been digging a sand hole which tragically collapsed, burying both children. While Maddox was buried up to his chest and is expected to recover, Sloan was fully buried and tragically passed away.
The victim’s father, Jason Mattingly owns Fort Wayne company D&S Interiors. Sloan Mattingly parents, Jason Mattingly and Therese Mattingly confirmed little girl’s passing away and said she was seven years old.
The collapse of a sand hole occurs when the sand does not have enough time to dry out and people enter the hole, causing it to fall through as the wet sand is unable to carry the load. Dr. Stephen Leatherman, a professor and researcher from Florida International University, explained that the deeper the hole, the greater the risk.

A sand hole should never be more than two feet deep as beyond this depth, the risk of collapse increases significantly. Dr. Leatherman further explained that as the sand starts to dry out and the angle of the hole exceeds 33 degrees so the sides of the hole can cave in within seconds.
Rescuing someone from a collapsed sand hole is extremely challenging because the sand lacks air pockets, making it heavy and prone to shifting.
Tragically, Sloan Mattingly’s death is not an isolated incident. Every year, three to five children die from sand hole collapses with many more being severely injured. Despite its association with relaxed recreational settings, sand hole collapses can be deceptive in their danger.
7-year-old Sloan Mattingly died and her 9-year-old brother Maddox was hospitalized after a sand hole the family was digging collapsed, trapping them inside.
The family , from Indiana, was on vacation at a South Florida beach in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

Precautionary measures
In the case of Sloan Mattingly, despite efforts from bystanders to rescue her, she was pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital. The beach where the incident occurred does not have lifeguards and this highlights the importance of beach safety and awareness of the dangers posed by sand holes.
This tragic event is a reminder of the potential dangers that can lurk in activities that appear harmless. It is essential for parents and caregivers to be aware of the risks associated with sand holes and to take precautions to ensure the safety of children at the beach and other sandy areas.
A tragic accident has happened to my wife’s family, an unimaginable devastating loss to her cousin Jason and his wife Therese. Please share and consider donating to the family. They are wonderful people. https://t.co/NMZDudT7hf
