Kyle Smaine was a US professional skier who was killed in the city of Japan after being thrown away 50 meters and then buried by an avalanche. Kyle Smaine was skiing on the Hakuba Norikura Mountain near Tsugaike ski resort on Sunday when he and two others were caught up in an avalanche. In 2016, Smaine was ranked 9th at X Games Aspen.

โ€˜He was there visiting the country for promoting the winter in tourism at the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic,โ€™ according to the outdoor magazine, Mountain Gazette.

โ€˜Another man, said to be from Austria also died in the avalanche, while three other skiers managed to get down the mountain on their own,โ€˜ police said.

Officers have so far declined to confirm any details about the two men. Smaine, who won a gold medal in the halfpipe event which was held at the FIS Freestyle Ski and the Snowboarding World Championships held in 2015 was one among the men who have died.

One person who is fellow US skier Adam U was with Smaine when the avalanche happened. He stated to Mountain Gazette, “We heard the crack. We realized that is a big one. We began running and then we got hit there.”

In a post posted over Instagram, a friend of Smaine stated, “It was supposed to be which is the last day of the trip so we were just out for a mellow tour to the freeski, as we had one of the best days ever skiing and shooting the day before.โ€
