After a six-match winless streak, including three consecutive Serie A defeats that saw them drop out of the top four, Inter’s season teetered on the edge. A 3-3 draw against Benfica in the Champions League quarterfinal second leg allowed them to advance 5-3 on aggregate, providing Inzaghi with a lifeline to rectify the situation.
This season, Inzaghi tried out a high-pressing strategy as a change from their usual counter-attacking approach that resulted in championship success two years earlier. Nonetheless, the squad had trouble defending, which forced them to rely more on their counterattacking and compactness skills.
This change was successful, and during the course of the previous month, all tournaments saw an eight-match winning streak. Remarkably, Inter won against stiff competition, including AC Milan, Juventus, Lazio, and AS Roma.
Inter’s victories over Juventus knocked them out of the Coppa Italia semi-finals, while AC Milan failed to find the net in all four encounters this year. Inter overcame their cross-city opponents to win convincingly 3-0 on the overall score in the Champions League semi-finals.
