Arjun Babuta bio

Arjun Babuta is an Indian sport shooter who was born on January 24, 1999, in Fazilka. He competes in the 10-meter air rifle events and recently finished fourth at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He has been a part of the Indian national shooting team ever since 2016 and currently ranks 14 in the world rankings. Despite being born in Punjab, Arjun moved to Chandigarh after finishing school due to his father’s job.

Arjun Babuta finishes fourth at Paris Olympics 2024

Arjun succumbed to pressure during the final rounds of the 10m air rifle event, finishing in fourth place at his first-ever Olympics on Monday. As a result, he narrowly missed out on winning a medal. The 25-year-old started off strong in the final with a 10.7, followed by a 10.2. With his third shot of 10.5, he was at fourth, and a further 10.4 set him up at third. He then scored a 10.6 to conclude the first series.

Meanwhile, in the second series, he started off with a 10.7, followed by a 10.5, and then a near-perfect 10.8. This propelled him to second place, with just a 0.1 point gap behind China’s world record holder Sheng Lihao. However, Babuta lost his form and missed out on a medal after scoring just 9.5 in response to Croatia’s Miran Maricic’s 10.7. As a result, he scored only 208.4 in total. Meanwhile, Lihao emerged as the winner with a gold and an Olympic record of 252.2.

Career and achievements

Arjun Babuta started taking an interest in shooting during his college years. Moreover, he had met Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra back in 2013, which left an impression. Bindra later introduced him to coach Colonel JS Dhillon, who advised him to take up 10m air rifle shooting. That same year, Babuta won his first medal at the Chandigarh State Shooting Championship.

Around 2016, Babuta achieved his career-best score of 632.4 during a shooting event in the Czech Republic. After suffering a setback due to health issues, he made a successful return with a third-place finish at the Khelo India Tournament. During the Asian Championships in Jakarta earlier this year, Babuta scored an impressive 629.6 in the qualifiers and a 165.9 in the final, finishing at sixth place. Arjun Babuta secured his Paris Olympics berth following a silver medal win at the Asian Shooting Championships in Changwon last year. There he scored 633.4 points during the qualification rounds and another 251.2 in the final round.
