Shohely Akhter bio
Shohely Akhter Khatun who is a Muslim by religion is a Bangladeshi cricketer who was born on June 16, 1988, in Rajbari District, Bangladesh. She is currently 36 years old. and plays as a right-arm off break bowler. Shohely has so far played in two One Day Internationals and five twenty20 internationals for Bangladesh. On the domestic level, she plays for the Dhaka Division.
She mainly plays as a right-arm off-break bowler and last played for the national side back in September 2022. She featured in the team for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup in Bangladesh. Shohely Akhter most notably won a silver medal against the China national women’s cricket team at the 2010 Asian Games.
Shohely Akhter banned for match fixing
The ICC has reportedly found Shohely guilty of attempting to fix matches during the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup. Following the charges, the ICC has placed a five-year ban on the 36-year-old off-spinner. Shohely reportedly admitted to breaching five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, including Articles 2.1.1, 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.4.4, and 2.4.7. The five-year ban will take effect starting from February 10, 2025.
Shohely Akhter’s attempted match-fixing
According to the investigation, Shohely had a conversation with a fellow undisclosed cricketer on Facebook Messenger on February 14, 2023. It took place before the Bangladesh-Australia match, where Shohely attempted to convince her teammate to engage in match-fixing.
Shohely reportedly told the player that her ‘cousin’ regularly bets on his phone and had asked if she would agree to get out hit wicket. The veteran batter reportedly offered 2 million Bangladesh takas in exchange for the fix. Additionally, she stated that she could pay even further if the amount was not sufficient. She ended her offers with further assurance of full secrecy, besides advising her to delete their conversation.
However, the player in question rejected her approach and simply reported the matter to the ACU immediately. She also provided the recordings as evidence against Shohely Akhter. As such, although Shohely deleted the messages from her own device, the ACU already had the necessary information.
