A 23-year-old woman named Vaishnavi Shashank Hagawane reportedly committed suicide on afternoon of Friday, May 16. Hagawane hung herself at her residence in Bhukum, Mulshi tehsil, Pune, leaving her friends and family in shock. Upon further investigations, police and her family allege that Vaishanavi carried out the tragic act after facing relentless mental and physical abuse from her in-laws. The family have since filed a complaint citing dowry harassment against her husband’s family at Bavdhan police station.

Police in Maharashtra have arrested a man named Shashank Hagawane in connection with a dowry harassment case. Shashank was the husband of a deceased woman named Vaishnavi who recently committed suicide. Aside from Shashank, authorities also arrested his mother Lata and sister Karishma in connection with the case.
Authorities have reportedly booked the Hagawane family under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for abetment to suicide and domestic violence. Vaishnavi was a 23-year-old woman who allegedly died by suicide on May 16 in Bhukum, Pune. She allegedly carried out the gruesome act after enduring months of mental and physical harassment. According to reports, Vaishnavi’s in-laws reportedly demanded excessive dowry, including the likes of 51 tolas of gold, a Fortuner SUV, and silver utensils.

Shashank Hagawane belongs to a family that holds political and social influence in the Mulshi region. His father Rajendra Hagawane contested in the 2004 assembly elections from Mulshi, and secured over 61,000 votes, finishing in second. Meanwhile, his older brother Sushil served as the President of the Youth NCP in Mulshi. He also has a sister named Karishma, who works as a fashion designer and stylist, and runs the brand “Laxmitara by Karishma.”

Shashank Hagawane married Vaishnavi in an extravagant wedding influenced by lavish demands from the groom’s side. Based on the allegations, Shashank and his family reportedly insisted on an extravagant wedding, besides demanding dowry in gold, an SUV, and luxury items. Vaishnavi’s family also claimed that she suffered intense mental and physical abuse post-marriage which ultimately drove her to commit suicide.
Three family members of ex-NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader Rajendra Hagawane have been arrested by Bavdhan Police in connection with the dowry-related death of his daughter-in-law Vaishnavi Shashank Hagawane (23) and those arrested include: Shashank Rajendra Hagawane (27) – Vaishnavi’s husband, Lata Rajendra Hagawane (50) – Shashank’s mother, Karishma Rajendra Hagawane (24) – Shashank’s sister.
The arrests follow an FIR registered after Vaishnavi was found hanging at her home in Bhukum on May 16 at 4:30 PM.
