Age is nothing more than a number to Sharath Kamal Achanta as he made history by taking home four medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, including three gold ones. He defeated England’s Liam Pitchford in the men’s singles finals on Monday to claim victory.

At the 2006 CWG games in Melbourne, 40-year-old Kamal earned his last and only other gold medal in the singles event. He now holds 13 CWG medals, 7 of which are gold medals.

Kamal earned gold medals in the men’s team competition and the mixed pairs competition at the 2022 CWG games. In the men’s double event, he and G Sathiyan also took home silver.

Who Is Sharath Kamal?

Achanta Sharath Kamal is a star professional table tennis player from India. He has recently been in the news because he won a total of four medals at the recently held Commonwealth Games 2022.

He was born on 12 July 1982 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His father’s name is Srinivasa Rao who is also a former table tennis player and his mother’s name is Annapurna who is a housewife. He also has one brother and his name is Rajath Kamal.

He did his schooling at PSBB Nungambakkam school. Later, he attended Loyola College, Chennai where he did a B. com. Currently, he is employed as an officer at the Indian Oil Corporation.

Sharath Kamal is married and his wife’s name is Sriipoorni SK. They both have one son and daughter together.

His height is 187 cm or 5 ft 2 inches. He is presently 40 years old. He was honoured with Arjuna Award in 2004 and Padma Shri Award in 2019. With 515 points, he has a ranking of 515 in the world.

His Career

In the 16th Commonwealth table tennis competition, held in Kuala Lumpur in 2004, Sharath Kamal won the men’s singles gold medal.

Later on, he won the 2010 US Open Men’s Table Tennis Championships, which were held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He won the Egypt Open in the same year. He also served as captain of the Indian men’s team, who defeated England to claim the team championship in the same competition.

At the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, in 2006, he also took home the gold medal. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, he partnered up with Subhajit Saha to win the Men’s Doubles gold medal.

In the men’s team competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Sharath Kamal won three medals: gold alongside Anthony Amalraj, Harmeet Desai, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and Sanil Shetty; silver in the men’s doubles competition; and bronze in the men’s singles competition.

He was the 1st Indian to win the Pyongyang Invitational Tournament, which was held in Pyongyang, North Korea, in the year 2007.

He also competed for TSV Gräfelfing in the German Bundesliga in the 2010–11 season, when he was one of the league’s top players and defeated some of the finest TT players in Germany.

He competed in the Swedish league from 2012 to 2013, then came back to Germany in May 2013 to join Borussia Düsseldorf. The 2013 Deutsche Pokal, a famous cup competition in Germany, was also won by Sharath and the team.

Recently, Sharath Kamal won 4 medals including 3 gold medals at Commonwealth Games 2022.
