Authorities have identified Shane Devon Tamura as the shooter behind the recent deadly shooting that took place in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening, find out more below

Tamura opened fire inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue, killing four people, including an NYPD officer.

Tamura had driven across the country from Nevada before killing four people in a shooting rampage in Manhattan including an off duty police officer.

Didarul Islam was a dedicated officer from the NYPD’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx, who was recently killed during a mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue. The tragic shooting took place at around 6:30 p.m. on July 28, killing at least four people. Authorities later identified the shooter as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, who arrived at the building in a black BMW, before exiting with a rifle.

Interestingly, the shootings took place near a location that houses the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG offices.

Shane Tamura identified as Midtown NYC shooter

Authorities have identified Shane Tamura as the NYC shooter who stormed the 345 Park Avenue skyscraper just before 6:30 p.m. Tamura reportedly opened fire and fatally shot three civilians and a police officer. As panic echoed through the upper floors, police officers quickly evacuated the building and later discovered Tamura’s body on the 33rd floor, where he had apparently taken his own life.

Shane Devon Tamura, 27, went into 345 Park Ave. in midtown just after the end of business Monday armed with an M4 rifle and opened fire in the lobby and again on the 33rd floor before he eventually killed himself with having a documented mental health history.

The NFL offices were located on the fifth floor of the building he targeted and also houses some of the country’s top financial firms, including private equity giant Blackstone, and KPMG.

Shane was licensed till 2027 to carry his weapon in Nevada.

Tamura has a Las Vegas address, and the black BMW he got out of in Manhattan is registered to him in Nevada and inside the vehicle, investigators found a rifle case with rounds, ammunition magazines, a loaded revolver and prescribed medication.

Motive behind the shootings

As of now, the officials have not confirmed an official motive behind the shootings, but speculations suggest that Tamura probably carried it out of possible frustration with his failed football career. Some reports suggest that Tamura may have resented not making it into the NFL, whose headquarters are located in the same building as the shooting. As of now, all of these theories remain unverified, but the police have not released further information.

The suspect left a note at the scene voicing anger that his mental illness may be linked to his having played football and wondered about “CTE” as being a possible cause of his mental illness. He died from a self inflicted gun shot to the chest.

Charges and allegations

Since Tamura died at the scene, no formal charges have been filed against him. However, police are treating the incident as a mass shooting and potential targeted attack.

Tamura who had mixed ethnicity was born in Hawaii but later moved to Las Vegas however details about his religion haven’t been revealed yet. Shane’s surname Tamura is of Japanese origin.

Shane Tamura was a native of Las Vegas, Nevada, and he was 27 years old at the time of his death. Tamura graduated from high school in 2016 and during his time in school, he was known for his athleticism and standout performance as a running back. Although Tamura has mostly stayed out of the public eye after high school, his recent actions have brought him to the forefront of headlines.

Tamura transferred to Granada Hills Charter School in Granada Hills, a neighborhood in Los Angeles, in 2015 when he was a senior, coming from a school in Santa Clarita.

He left a suicide note claiming that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and pleaded for his brain to be examined.

The note stated: “Terry Long football gave me CTE, and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze. You can’t go against the NFL; they’ll squash you. Study my brain, please. I’m sorry. Tell Rick I’m sorry for everything.”

Terry Long was a footballer who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers and was diagnosed with CTE and died by suicide after drinking antifreeze in 2005.

His family’s house is located in Desert Shores and Tamura’s parents purchased the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in January 2021 for $383,000 with Tamura sharing the home with them.

Tamura had only one run-in with the law in Las Vegas, a trespassing charge that was later dismissed by prosecutors.

Profession

Tamura has previously worked as a security guard, and he last worked at a casino in Las Vegas.

He had pursued football seriously in his youth and even made attempts to join the NFL with him being a running back.

He was previously issued a work card by the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board, which has since expired and completed high school in the Los Angeles area, where he was a competitive football player.

Meanwhile, Hakeem Jeffries, who is the House Minority Leader, also responded by writing:

Deeply disturbed by the horrific shooting in Midtown Manhattan. Praying hard for the brave NYPD officer impacted and all other victims of this tragedy. May God watch over our city during this challenging moment.”
