Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Sunday critiqued the leadership of Indian men’s national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma. Whie reacting to India’s recent match against New Zealand in the ongoing Champions Trophy, Shama stated the following on X:
Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Needs to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!”
After facing major backlash from fans and opponents, the Congress leader deleted her post, and replied
It was a generic tweet about the fitness of a sportsperson. It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that.”
She further justified her statement, stating that she was attacked for no reason.
Shama further added that she was simply comparing him with previous captains and she had the right to do it.

Shama Mohamed is a renowned Indian political spokesperson who was born on May 17, 1973, in Cherukallayi near New Mahe, Kannur district, Kerala in an Indian Muslim family. Prior to joining politics, she briefly worked as a journalist for Indian media outlet, Zee TV. She became a member of the Indian National Congress in 2015 and is quite vocal of her opinions. Sahama actively supports and advocates for all kinds of public reforms.
Education
Shama Mohamed attended Indian School, Kuwait, for her primary education. After returning to India in 1990, she earned a Bachelor of Dental Sciences degree from Yenepoya University, Mangalore.
Political Career
Shama Mohamed joined the Indian National Congress in 2015 as the national spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee. She later became their national media panelist in December 2018. She has notably built her political presence in the Kannur and Taliparamba constituencies. Shama is renowned for having strongly criticized the government’s decision to regulate digital news platforms.
