Final election results for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi have recently been released. After 15 years in power, the Bhartiya Janta Party was driven out of the Delhi MCD by the Aam Aadmi Party.

While congratulations are pouring in on winning candidates for their victories, Shakila Begum, the independent candidate who won the Seelampur ward no. 225, has become the buzz of the town because of her viral video in which she was seen wearing full Burkha while talking about women’s empowerment.

She wore a burqa from head to toe following her victory, including when she spoke to the media. Even her face couldn’t be seen.

Shakila was seated next to the man, who assisted her in providing the answers. When she was asked for her response, she was unable to do so since she did not understand the question. Later, Shakeela Begum stated that she is praying for the Seelampur residents in accordance with the helper.

Who Is Shakila Begum?

Shakila Begum is an Indian politician who recently become a councilor after winning the Delhi MCD elections. She has been in the news because one of her videos in which she was seen wearing a full burkha went viral.

Shakila Begum won the Seelampur seat, which is designated for women and is thought to be a ward with a Muslim majority. She is currently 44 years old.  Although she ran as an Independent this time, she had won the same ward in the 2017 MCD elections on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.

There were eleven other candidates running in the same ward, including Mumtaz from the Congress, Seema Sharma from the BJP, Naseem Bano from the AAP, and Shabnam from the All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. Shakila Begum was one of three candidates running as Independents.

The sensitive Seelampur neighborhood in North East Delhi experienced major violence in February 2020 as a result of protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act.
