In the mosque, Zorba was visible as a 6-foot-3-inch guy dressed in a white hoodie. He was there among the believers and was seen on surveillance tape kneeling and bowing as he attacked Elnakib in the back.

According to the prosecution, Serif Zorba was charged with first-degree attempted murder, third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon. He stood before the judge on Monday and pleaded not guilty.

While the police have not yet determined why the imam was attacked, another imam claimed that the event was uncommon. Police learned that Zorba had previously worshipped at the Omar Mosque despite not being a member of the mosque.
