44-year-old Laphonza Butler has been chosen by California Governor Gavin Newsom to take Dianne Feinstein’s place in the Senate.
During the remaining 15 months of Dianne Feinstein’s term, Butler will fill in for the former Senate member.
Who Is Laphonza Butler?
Laphonza Butler was raised in Magnolia, Mississippi. She attended South Pike High School. She later graduated from Jackson State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
She was chosen in 2018 by Jerry Brown, the governor of California at the time, to serve as a regent on the University of California Board. This signalled her move into politics. Three years later, she decided to call it a quit.
She was the first black woman to lead EMILY’s List as president in 2021.

Laphonza Butler’s On Replacing Dianne Feinstein
Gavin Newsom selected Laphonza Butler on Monday to take the place of the late Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein.
She said, “It is an honour to receive Gov. Newsom’s nomination for U.S. Senator from California, a place I have called home for many years. The Governor’s confidence in me is humbling. The influence and impact of Dianne Feinstein are tremendous.”
She further added that she will do her best to honour her by committing her time and efforts to serve the people of California and the citizens of this great nation.
Laphonza Butler’s Family
Neneki Lee, the spouse of Laphonza Butler, serves as the head of the SEIU Public Services Division. The couple together have a daughter together and named her Nylah, who is 8 years old now.
At the SEIU headquarters in Washington, DC, the two initially ran into each other. Neneki held the position of National Coordinator at the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions from 2010 to 2013 before taking on the role of National Division Director of Public Services at SEIU.
Lee graduated from Scripps College with a bachelor’s degree in political science and government. The 49-year-old and Laphonza have been married for nearly ten years now.
