After defeating Drinkhall of England in a thrilling match for the Table Tennis MS Bronze Medal, Sathiyan won the contest. Indian champion prevailed 4-3 in the contest (11-9 11-3 11-5 8-11 9-11 10-12 11-9).

Sathiyan won back-to-back medals in only two days with the bronze, giving him six total medals at the Commonwealth Games since Gold Coast 2018.

Who Is Sathiyan Gnanasekaran?

Sathiyan Gnanasekaran is a famous Indian table tennis player. He has recently been in the news because he won his first men’s singles at the recently held Commonwealth Games 2022.

He was born on 8 January 1993 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His father’s name is not known while his mother’s name is Malakodi Gnanasekaran. He also has two sisters and their names are Divya and Rekha Gnanasekaran.

He did his schooling at Kola Perumal Vaishnav Senior Secondary School, Tamil Nadu. He later attended St. Joseph’s College of Engineering, Chennai where he did a Btech in Information Technology.

His height is 172 cm or 5 ft 6 inches. He is 28 years old as of now with his net worth standing at Rs.50 lakhs. While both his sisters are married, he is currently unmarried with his men’s singles standing at 37 with 585 points.

His Career

In September 2016, Sathiyan triumphed in the men’s singles division of the ITTF Challenge Belgium Open. He won the men’s singles gold medal at the 2017 ITTF Challenge – Spanish Open in Almeria.

He participated in his first Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, in April 2018, winning three medals. He also had a significant impact by defeating Japan twice in the Men’s Team category quarterfinals and winning a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2018, which were contested in Jakarta for the first time in 60 years.

He earned the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games, falling to South Korea 0-3 in the final.

At the Asian TT Championships in September 2019, he achieved the biggest victory of his career by defeating Japanese phenom Tomokazu Harimoto in straight sets. He also provided a standout performance in the same competition by being the first Indian to ever, and after a gap of 43 years, make it to the Men Singles Quarterfinals.

Sathiyan made his first World Cup appearance on November 29, 2019. Sathiyan participated in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics in 2021. Now, in 2022, he won the bronze medal at CWG 2022.
