Sarah Bond testifies for Microsoft Xbox
Sarah Bond recently testified in court for Microsoft Xbox in the company’s ongoing legal battle with Federal Trade Commission (FTC). During her time on the stage, officials questioned her about a variety of products that the Activision deal will directly impact. This included the impact of the smartphone as a platform, to which she responded:
Mobile is effectively a duopoly: Google and Apple.”
During her time on the witness stand, Bond answered questions about Game Pass and its editions, stating how she likes it. She also answered questions about distribution rights, stating how Game Pass has benefitted both the developer and the gamer. According to Bond, almost half of the Human Fall Flat players came through Game Pass.
Bond also said the following about Cloud Gaming and bundling xCloud with Game Pass Ultimate:
xCloud as part of GPU (Game Pass Unlimited) is being used more as a feature. Instead of waiting for the download of a game, you can start playing right away via streaming. Majority of usage is like that.”
In regards to the question about Activision games like Diablo and Call of Duty, Bond commented that the Diablo franchise has been around for quite a long time and stated how it is her 76-year-old father’s “favorite game” and plays it “to this date.” Meanwhile, Sarah clarified that Call of Duty was on a different level and difficult to put up a deal for such a huge franchise that was released on multiple platforms. Bond clarified how “there were very clear limits” on their Call of Duty deal.
The FTC vs Microsoft federal court battle
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has sued Microsoft over concerns about the Activision deal. The American regulatory body is concerned that the new deal could give Microsoft with enough powers to put other competitions like Nintendo and Sony, at a strategic disadvantage. The five-day trials began today, October 27, 2023 with many representatives from the company.
On the first day of the trial, Sony declared that they will not share any PS6 info with Activision even if Microsoft acquires them. Meanwhile Microsoft acknowledged the fact that it has lost the “console wars.” Up until now, Sarah Bond, Pete Hines (head of publishing at Bethesda) and Matt Booty (Xbox Game Studios chief) have all testified for Microsoft. Other top executiveslike CEO Satya Nadella will also testify in the coming days.
