An Independent candidate from the Faridkot (Reserved) constituency in Punjab’s upcoming Lok Sabha elections is making headlines not just for contesting as an Independent candidate but as being a relative of one of the individual involved in the assassination of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.

For the unfamiliar, the contesting candidate is identified as 45-year-old Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, who left school in Class XII, is the son of Beant Singh, one of the two individuals involved in the assassination of the former Prime Minister at her residence on October 31, 1984.

About Sarabjit Singh Khalsa
Over the course of years, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa has been actively involved in electoral polls. As per media reports, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa first ran in Punjab Assembly election from Bhadaur in Barnala district in 2007 and received a total of 15,702 votes.
Subsequently, in 2009 and 2014, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa again made unsuccessful attempts in the Bathinda and Fatehgarh Sahib (Reserved) constituencies respectively.
In 2014 election, in his election affidavit, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa disclose his assets amounting to be Rs. 3.5 crore.
Later, in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa once again contested, however, as the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. But this time again, luck wasn’t on his side and he did not secure victory.
For the unversed, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa hails from a political background family. His mother, Bimal Kaur, and his grandfather, Sucha Singh, both tightly held the positions as the Member of Parliament from Ropar and Bathinda, respectively, in 1989.
