In May 2016, Nickeil Alexander-Walker declined offers from USC and Maryland in favour of Virginia Tech. Alexander-Walker averaged 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while playing for the Hokies as a rookie.

He was a member of the Virginia Tech Hokies basketball team. He was traded to the New Orleans Pelicans after being selected 17th overall by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2019 NBA draft as a shooting guard.

Nickeil scored a season-high with29 points in a 132-93 victory over The Citadel in his first game as a college student. He assisted in leading Virginia Tech to a 21–12 record and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.


During the regular season as a sophomore, Alexander-Walker averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. With a 12–6 ACC record and a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, when they made it to the Sweet 16, he assisted in leading Virginia Tech to a 24–8 season.
