Rachael Gunn, aka Raygun, recently competed at the Paris 2024 Olympic breaking event after previously qualifying at the Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023.

Raygun received a lot of mixed reactions for her performance at the event after she decided to break from convention and throw in her own unique moves.

Sammy The Free, who’s real name is Samuel Free, is a professional breakdancer from Australia. He started out dancing from an early age, and has so far won a number of titles to his name. Ahead of the Paris Olympics, many were expecting him to represent his country in breakdancing when it was announced as an Olympic sport. Despite the anticipation, he suffered a knee injury which left him unable to compete. Following the setback, Sammy instead chose to coach his wife, who competed at the Olympics.

Sammy The Free has served as Raygun’s coach for several years now. It was Sam who initially introduced her to breakdancing after they met. Rachael once shared in an interview how he encouraged her to give it a try although it was hard and overwhelming. Raygun shared how Sammy recognised her struggles as a woman and encouraged her to improve.
Raygun also shared about her journey of training for the Olympics, which involved a lot of training. The couple reportedly spent four hours each day, including working out in the gym and dancing on the street at night. Racheal shared how she often got annoyed at her husband throughout the training. Meanwhile, Sammy The Free also admitted about their difficulties on various occasions but also spoke how proud she was of her performance at the Olympics.
Following her performances at the Olympics, Sam shared in a Facebook post:
The main thing is she represented Australia and breaking at the Olympics with courage and dignity. It comes naturally for some of them, not so much for Rachael. It is part of the culture.”
Raygun and Sammy The Free relationship and marriage
Raygun and Sammy The Free first met each other in Sydney in 2008 and eventually began dating. Rachael had grown up doing ballroom, jazz and tap dancing, but eventually began breakdancing in the early 2010s after much influence from Sam. Raygun once shared how Sam introduced her to the breaking scene in Sydney. The pair eventually got married ten years after they met in 2018.
