How Anuj Chaudhary sparked controversy?
Ahead of Holi 2025, DSP Anuj Chaudhary, the Circle Officer (CO) of Sambhal, has once again found himself in the spotlight due to a controversial remark. His statement regarding Holi coinciding with Friday prayers on March 14 sparked debates across political and religious circles. Chaudhary remarked that while Friday occurs 52 times a year, Holi is celebrated only once.

Anuj urged the Muslim community to either pray at home if they wished to avoid colors or to embrace the festive spirit if they ventured outside. However, his words drew sharp criticism from various quarters. Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ram Gopal Yadav strongly condemned Chaudhary, alleging his role in the Sambhal violence. He accused the officer of ordering police action during the unrest and predicted that such individuals would eventually face legal consequences.
Anuj Chaudhary hails from Badheri village in Muzaffarnagar. Before joining the Uttar Pradesh Police, he was an acclaimed international wrestler. He dominated the national wrestling scene from 1997 to 2014, earning prestigious accolades such as the Laxman Award (2001) and the Arjuna Award (2005). His transition into law enforcement came in 2012 when he was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) through the sports quota.
He won two medals in the National Games of 2002 and 2010 and has also won two bronze medals in the Asian Championship.
Anuj Chaudhary (born 5 August 1980) is a Hindu Jat of Pawar gotr from village Badhedi, Muzaffarnagar District of Uttar Pradesh and is an Olympian Wrestler and Police Officer in Uttar Pradesh.
Arjuna award-winning wrestler Anuj Chaudhary had back in 2007 been issued a notice by a court here on a complaint by his wife alleging that he had fraudulently obtained a divorce and married another woman.
His wife Geetanjali, in her petition, alleged that Chaudhary, had got the divorce on October 16, 2006 despite living with her at the time and had asked the court to revoke the divorce as it was given without her knowledge.
