Who is Sam Manekshaw?
Sam Manekshaw is an Indian Army soldier, renowned for being the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War.
His full name is Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, and many people also fondly know him as Sam Bahadur. He was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab. His father was Hormizd Manekshaw, a doctor, and his mother was Hilla, a housewife. He and his family belong to the Parsi community. He also had five siblings.
Following the completion of his education in Punjab, Sam Manekshaw enrolled at Sherwood College in Nainital. Later, in 1929, when he was 15 years old and had earned his Junior Cambridge Certificate, he left the college. He earned a distinction in his Senior Cambridge (in the Cambridge Board’s School Certificate) in 1931.
Manekshaw afterward enrolled at the Hindu Sabha College, which is now the Hindu College, Amritsar, to study science. Manekshaw later enrolled in the inaugural batch of cadets at the Indian Military Academy (IMA).
Sam Manekshaw was married, and his wife’s name was Siloo Bode. In 1940 and 1945, respectively, the couple gave birth to two daughters, Sherry and Maya (later Maja). He died on 27 June 2008, at 12:30 a.m. at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu.
At the time of his death, he was 94 years old with his height at 5 feet 9 inches.
Manekshaw died of complications from pneumonia at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu, at 12:30 a.m. on 27 June 2008 at the age of 94 and his last words were “I’m okay!” He was buried in a Parsi cemetery in Udhagamandalam (Ooty), Tamil Nadu, with military honours, adjacent to his wife’s grave.
His career
At the Indian Military Academy, Manekshaw started his military career in 1932. He later served in World War II and was awarded the Military Cross. After the partition in 1947, he enlisted in the 8th Gorkha Rifles and participated in preparing for both the Hyderabad Crisis and the Indo-Pakistani War.
As he advanced through the ranks, he held important roles, including commandant of the Defense Services Staff College and GOC of the 26th Infantry Division. Manekshaw, who was chosen to be the seventh chief of the army staff in 1969, led Indian troops to victory in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh.
He received the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan, India’s second and third-highest civilian accolades, for his outstanding service.

He died due to pneumonia complications.
