The Secretariat of Public Safety in Solidaridad said in a statement that a dead woman with possible signs of violence was found in a hotel in the Xcalacoco neighbourhood. The Mexican government then arrested a man, who is now known to be Friesen. The state prosecutor’s office in Quintana Roo also confirmed that Friesen had been arrested in connection with the death of a Canadian woman.

Agnew’s family and coworkers are very sad about how she died. Katlyn Levesque, her aunt, said that she was “beautiful and wonderful on the inside and out” and that she had a “golden heart.”
In a Facebook post, Agnew’s office, the Lake View Credit Union, also sent its condolences and said that “all at Lake View Credit Union are mourning the loss of our teammate and friend, Kiara Agnew. This is a devastating tragedy and loss for our community. We send our love and faith to all others who have been impacted.”

Agnew and Friesen were said to have been together for about 18 months. They booked their trip to Mexico around Christmas for a celebration trip a few days before Agnew turned 24.
The Global Affairs department of the Canadian government confirmed that Friesen was being held by Mexican authorities and that officials were helping the families and talking to local authorities. Agnew’s death is still being looked into, and her family is waiting for the results of the autopsy to learn more about what happened.
