Because of his brutal reputation, Surovikin, sometimes known as “General Armageddon,” was a celebrated soldier in the Chechen and Syrian wars. He is said to have been detained for supporting Wagner leader Yevgeny “Prigozhin” during the rebellion.
The Russian Ministry of Defense has not responded to the reports. However, many media reports are saying that Sergei Surovikin’s detention is part of a larger purge within the military command, prompted by the Wagner forces’ attempt to seize Moscow and apprehend senior leaders.

Who is Sergei Surovikin?
Sergei Surovikin is a renowned Russian military general. He has been in the news because he was arrested for supporting the attempted coup by Wagner mercenary forces.
His full name is Sergey Vladimirovich Surovikin. He was born on 11 October 1966 in Novosibirsk, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He completed his schooling at Omsk Higher Military Command School in 1987. He is married; however, not much is known about his wife. He is also the father of four children.

His career
General Sergei Surovikin, a veteran of multiple conflicts, including the Soviet-Afghan War, the Tajikistani Civil War, the Second Chechen War, and Russian intervention in Syria, held key military positions during his prolonged military career.
During the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he oversaw all Russian forces. His participation in the 1991 Soviet coup attempt resulted in temporary detention. He oversaw the Eastern Military District and was a key figure in the development of the Main Directorate of the Military Police.
Sergei Surovikin was initially an incharge of Army Group “South” in Ukraine and subsequently oversaw all Russian forces before being succeeded.
