The viral video shows Abakarova inside a room with the chess boards are neatly arranged for the players. Amina then looks around the room for the first few seconds before eventually stopping in front of a particular table. After reaching the table where Osmanova was supposed to appear 20 minutes later, she smeared mercury all over the chessboard and the pieces. The video then ends with Amina walking out of the room.

Amina Abakarova is a veteran chess player who is currently embroiled in a controversy after poisoning a fellow chess player. She is reportedly 40 years old and works as a chess coach from Makhachkala in the Russian Republic of Dagestan. Amina reportedly poisoned her rival, 30-year-old Umayganat Osmanova with Mercury.

Amina Abakarova accused of poisoning rival
The incident took place at the Dagestan Chess Championship on August 2. Amina reportedly asked around if cameras were in operation before smearing the board with potentially deadly mercury from a thermometer. Osmanova replied that instantly felt unwell 30 minutes later, while complaining of nausea and dizziness. Medical officials and doctors eventually arrived on the scene and concluded that she was poisoned. Osmanova further stated that another player as well as a member of the organization also became ill.
Amina Abakarova facing suspension and possible jail time
Following the shocking incident, officials reviewed the footage from security cameras, and identified the arbiter as Abakarova. They then reported it to the police who detained her. Abakarova is currently under police custody and could face up to three years in jail. Russian Chess Federation President Andrey Filatov confirmed that they have suspended Abakarova from Russian chess events with investigations underway. Amina could potentially face a lifetime ban.
