Despite being a Moroccan, Romain Saiss was born in France on March 26, 1990. Although not much is known about his parents, what’s known is that Romain’s father was Moroccan and his mother was French, and both of them worked as restaurant owners.

Romain Saiss Professional Career

Romain Saiss began his senior career with Valence in the Championnat de France Amateur 2 (fifth-tier). At that time, he supplemented his €500 monthly salary by washing dishes at his parents’ restaurant.

He went on to sign his first professional contract with Clermont and later a two-year contract with Le Havre in June 2013, both Ligue 2 clubs. Following the end of the contract, he signed a two-year contract with Ligue 1 club Angers.

Romain then moved to England in 2016 after singing a new four-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Back then, the team played in the EFL Championship. He made his debut on September 17 during a 2-0 win over Newcastle United. The following ear, on September 30 he scored his first goal for the club during a 4-0 win over Burton Albion.

Wolves eventually earned promotion to the Premier League back in 2018, following which Saiss made his Premier League debut. He played his first match in the Premier League on 22 September 2018 as a substitute during a 1-1 away draw against Manchester United. Romain then made his first Premier League start on 30 November during a 1-2 away loss to Cardiff City.

Romain then made his UEFA European club football debut as a late substitute in Wolves’ 2-0 home win against Crusaders. The match took place on July 25, 2019 and was a UEFA Europa League Second Qualifying Round. He scored his first goal in a UEFA European competition on October 24. The goal came as the opening goal during a 2-1 away win at Slovan Bratislava.

Following the end of his contract with Wolves on July 1, 2022, Romain Saiss announced his move away from the team on May 31, 2022. Altogether he played for six seasons with the club where he played 206 games. He now currently plays in Turkey in the Süper Lig club Beşiktaş, and made his debut on August 6.

International Career

Despite being born and raised in France, Romain Saiss chose to play for his native Morocco men’s national football team. He made his debut for the Atlas Lions during a 1-0 friendly loss to Togo back in November 2012.

Romain played his first major tournament for Morocco during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, reaching the quarterfinals. There he managed to score his first international goal during a 3-1 group stage victory over Togo.

The following year, Romain was a part of Morocco’s 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. There he played in two of the group games against Iran and Spain.

He finally earned his place as captain of the Atlas Lions during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations when Morocco advanced to the last 16. Ever since, then Romain Saiss was again named as captain for Morocco’s 23-man squad in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
