Rob Jetten becomes the youngest and first openly gay PM of the Netherlands
Following an intense Dutch parliamentary election, Rob Jetten has emerged as the likely winner of the Prime Ministerial seat. The D66 party managed to tie with the Wilders’ Party for Freedom (PVV) with 26 seats each in the 150-member parliament. Despite the narrow result, Jetten will most likely form a coalition, as most of the major parties have ruled out partnering with Wilders. Following the news of the results, Jetten declared:
We’ve shown the world it’s possible to beat hate and populism.”
Once he is sworn in, Jetten will become the youngest Dutch prime minister and also the first openly gay leader in the nation’s history.
Rob Jetten biography
Rob Arnoldus Adrianus Jetten is a Dutch politician who was born in Uden, in southeastern Netherlands. He grew up in a modest, hard-working family, and he is a self-proclaimed “geek” who loved reading newspapers and following politics even as a young child. Before entering politics, Jetten worked as a consultant for the Dutch railway company ProRail. He also represented the Netherlands in athletics at the junior level, competing as a long-distance runner.

Political career
Rob Jetten entered the parliament back in 2017 and became the youngest leader of D66 just a year later. During his early years, critics called him “Robot Jetten” for his overly polished style, but Rob eventually managed to shed that image and became known for authenticity and discipline. He notably served as the Minister for Climate and Energy (2022–2024) under Mark Rutte and gained notable respect for pushing sustainable energy reforms.

Rob Jetten has been in a relationship with Argentine hockey player Nicolas Keenan since 2022, and the couple has plans to marry in Spain next summer after the two got engaged back in November 2024.
