Two years after ending a 17-year career, Burrow received a motor neurone disease diagnosis. He received the honour for his tireless efforts in battling MND while also increasing awareness of the disease.

Rob Burrow had to give up his beloved sport of rugby in 2017, therefore he hasn’t been on the field since. Since then, former England and Leeds Rhinos rugby player has had to contend with a very different battle named motor neuron disease.
40-year-old Rob Burrow, who was born in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, on 26 September 1982, became well known for his love of rugby a few years later.
In his 16-year career, Burrow spent all of it with Leeds Rhinos, appearing in nearly 500 games. He joined the team when he was 19 years old. He won the Challenge Cup twice, but with Leeds Rhinos, he took home eight Super League championships. Burrow was also chosen to participate in the 2008 Rugby League World Cup in Australia. After that, the scrum-half decided to call it quits in 2017, capping out his illustrious Rhinos career before being inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2020.

Burrow’s Motor Neurone Disease diagnosis was made public in December 2019. In an interview with the BBC last year, Burrow discussed his diagnosis.
“It was a bit of a shock. I’d not had any sort of prep for being told that you have something where there’s no cure,” he said to BBC Look North.
