The 63-year-old’s nomination comes days after the World Bank Group President David Malpass recently announced his intention to step down from his position.
The Board of Directors for the World Bank confirmed in a statement that Ajay would be the first-ever Indian-American and Sikh-American to head either of two top international financial institutions: the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Who’s Ajay Banga?
For those who are unfamiliar to Ajay Banga, let us tell you, he is an American business executive. Prior to the become the President of World Bank, Ajay whose full name is Ajaypal Singh Banga served as the position of Vice Chairman at General Atlantic.
Banga was born in Pune, India on November 10, 1959. He was executive chairman of Master card after having previously served as President and Chief Executive officer of the company from July 2010 until December 31, 2020.
His father, Harbhajan Singh Banga, was an Army officer who was posted in Khadki cantonment of Pune, India, however, his family is originally from Jalandhar, Punjab.
Ajay completed his education from St. Edward School, Shimla and later went to Hyderabad Public School in Hyderabad. He completed a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the St. Stephen’s College, Delhi and MBA from Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
Career
Ajay started out his business career with Nestlé in 1981 after spending the next 13 years working in jobs spanning sales, marketing and general management. Later, he joined PepsiCo and was involved in the launch of its international fast food franchise in India.
In 2020, Ajay was elected as the Chairman of the ICC succeeding Paul Polman. He previously served as ICC’s first Vice-Chair since June 2018.
On January 1 2022, Ajay assumed responsibilities at General Atlantic as Vice Chairman.
Net Worth
If you’re unsure, let us tell you, Ajay is also the chairman of Netherlands based investment holding company Exor and chairman of the public-private Partnership for Central America with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.
He has a net worth of $1.2 billion. Ritu’s net worth is not known though.
