Pro-paletine Indian American citizen Riddhi Patel delivered a proactive speech at a hearing in California’s Bakersfield. She was arrested after delivering the speech.

The United Liberation Front which is a pro-Palestinian organisation has been calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. The organization took to X after the incident became public and distanced itself from any threatening remarks being made by anyone.

The post said, “United Liberation Front unequivocally condemns any statements that threaten public officials.”

28 year old Riddhi Patel who is an Indian-American and a Hindu by religion was born and raised in Bakersfield. She attended Stockdale High school, California and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from Saint Louis University. Patel graduated in 2017 and returned to her hometown Bakersfield in 2019.

Apart from being a member of the Centre for Race, Poverty, and the Environment, Riddhi Patel is also an advocate for Palestine.

Riddhi Patel’s arrest

On Wednesday, Riddhi Patel who is a protestor was taken into custody during the city council meeting in Bakersfield. She was arrested for threatening the council members. According to media reports, “Patel made alarming threats towards council members and Karen Goh who is Republican Mayor, citing their lack of support for a cease-fire resolution against Israel and increased security measures at the government building in response to ongoing anti-Israel protests.”

Riddhi Patel entered a not guilty plea to eighteen felony charges. Based on her remarks, she is is accused of threatening terrorising public officials during the Bakersfield City Council meeting. She is set to court on April 24, 2024 at 9 a.m. after entering a not guilty plea. A $1 million bail has been imposed for her.

Reactions by netizens

Mixed reactions were triggered from netizens on Patel’s arrest. An X user- @0mNam0 mentioned, “We seriously need to expose US double standards. Pannun gives open threats to attack our PM, our country yet he is protected by US special forces.”

According to him, Patel was emotional while she delivered speech that’s why she cursed the US law makers. The users also questioned government about freedom of speech.

Another X user named @AnilJagtap67960 mentioned that being pro-Israel and  pro Palestine is okay but threatening someone to take life is a crime. According to this user, Riddhi’s arrest is appropriate.
