Slegers’ playing career ultimately came to an end due to a severe knee injury she suffered in November 2016, and she was compelled to declare her retirement in February 2018.

Slegers made her debut for the senior Netherlands women’s national football team on March 5, 2009, in a Cyprus Cup match against Russia. Slegers was included in the Netherlands squad for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2013 in Sweden in June 2013 by national team coach Roger Reijners.

After coaching IF Limhamn Bunkeflo’s under-19 squad during the 2018 season, Slegers was elevated to head coach in November of the same year. She was named head coach of Sweden’s under-23 national team in March 2021.

Slegers became Eidevall’s assistant coach at Arsenal after joining the team in September 2023. Slegers became interim head coach on October 15, 2024, after Eidevall resigned as head coach before going onto become the permanent manager. Slegers guided Arsenal to their second UEFA Women’s Champions League trophy on May 24, 2025, defeating FC Barcelona Femení 1-0 in the championship match.

Under Slegers, Arsenal went unbeaten in eleven matches, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Champions League, by finishing at the top of their group.
