Still, he is a respected official and was chosen to be one of the Video Assistant Referees at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This was the first time this technology had been used at this event. Also Sampaio made sure everything went smoothly and was praised for his part in how VAR was used. He is paid $70,000 as base salary at the FIFA World Cup 2022 and a salary of $3,000 per match.

Wilton Sampaio First Refereed At WC Russia

His first World Cup was in Russia, but he had been a referee for international games at the under-17 and under-15 levels before. He reportedly did well in VAR seminars, which made FIFA think he was ready for the next step. Since then, he has worked three games in this tournament.

His first game was when the Netherlands beat Senegal in the group stage. After that, he was in charge of Poland’s 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia. In the round of 16, he was in the middle of another Dutch game as they easily beat the USA.
