Only a few chances were created by Morocco in the first half, with the best opportunity coming from a close-range header by defender Nayef Aguerd that went over. Meanwhile, Spain, who controlled possession but offered little threat, had Marco Asensio hit the side of the net. There weren’t many opportunities in the second period either.
Achraf Hakimi whirled around and nearly broke into a dance step as he saw his Panenka seep into the goal’s centre before stopping abruptly, maybe due to an unexpected outburst of emotion. His teammates jumped on top of him and extended their arms to embrace him. In an apparent attempt to tease them, Hakimi sprinted in their direction toward Yassine Bounou, the goalie they affectionately refer to as Bono, the rock star of the evening who made two saves in the shootout off Spain’s second and third attempts from Sergio Busquets and Carlos Soler.
Following a 120-minute scoreless tie, Morocco defeated Spain 3-0 in the decisive match. Pablo Sarabia’s opening shot had rebounded off the post.
The most historic night in Moroccan football was marked by nonstop celebrations. Always the underdogs, their best performance to date was the 1986 pre-quarterfinals, where they were supported by their golden generation but lost to a Lothar Matthaus goal in the 88th minute.
It would have been much more satisfying if they had won against Spain, with whom they share a border and who they have had tumultuous diplomatic relations and territorial disputes in the past. Ironically, Spain was eliminated from the competition by a kick from a player who was born in Spain, Hakimi. Bounou also plays for LaLiga team Sevilla. Many more are Spanish-born or affiliated with Spanish-speaking clubs.
