Ranjitsinhji Biography

Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II, Jam Saheb of Nawanagar was born in 10 september 1872 at Kathiawar, Bobmay presidency. He is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. His flamboyant style and quick hands made him a nightmare for the bowlers. He also invented a famous cricket shot called Leg Glance. His unorthodox batting style helped him a lot in his strong back-foot game. He played first-class cricket for Cambridge University and the county for Sussex.

Apart from cricket, Ranjitsinhji was also named the Chancellor of the Indian Chamber of the prince. He also represented India at the league of nations where all the counties of the world were united for peace and harmony. His father’s name was Jiwansinhji and his mother’s name was Unknown and his cousin name is Vibhaji

Ranjitsinhji Stats in test cricket

At that time test cricket was the only format that existed. England and Australia were the only 2 nations that played cricket in the colonial period. Sir Ranjitsinhji used to play for England in the middle order. His stats were also quite impressive as he averaged 45 in the 15 matches he played. His bowling skills were not as good as his batting skills. He was a Right-arm medium pace bowler and only has a single wicket on his name.

He scored 2,780 runs at 57.91 with 10 hundreds for Cambridge and itt was a record for an English summer, going past Grace 2,739 in 1871. In 1899 and 1900, Ranji would go even further, passing 3,000 runs on both occasions. is overall 989 runs in 15 international Tests came at 44.95 with two hundreds.

From ruler of Nawanagar to father of Indian Domestic cricket

Indian domestic tournament is named after the great Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji II. Ranji Trophy is an Indian domestic first-class tournament played among 38 teams. The prestigious tournament was first played on 4 November 1934.

Ranjitsinhji’s Nephew Duleepsinhji also followed his path and decided to play cricket in England.

Some say that Duleepsinhji was an even better batsman than the great Rinjitsinhji. He averages 58 in the 12 test matches he played. He also has an Indian domestic tournament Duleep Trophy on his name.

Ranjitsinhji Wife And Girlfriends

A collection of letters was donated to Trinity College, Cambridge which Ranji had written to a Cambridge woman called Mary Holmes over a period of fourteen years. They have lead people to conclude that Mary Holmes rather than Edith Borissow was the women with whom Ranji fell in love.

Ranji had a relationship with three women in succession: Mary Holmes (and her sister) in the 1890s; Edith Borissow from 1900 to 1920; and Margaret Williams from 1920 until his death in 1933. A story emerged that Ranji may have had an illegitimate son – immediately given up for adoption –with Edith Borissow. His entire love story can be found here.
