The film tells the true stories of Hindu and Christian women from Kerala who were involved in the syndicate of love jihad, a practice that involves forced conversions and deceptions, and later joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Even, the United Nations issued a warning in its 2020 terrorism report regarding the presence of a significant number of ISIS terrorists in the Indian state of Kerala.
Between 2008 and 2009, there was a visible rise in conversions in Kerala, with several converted women and their Muslim husbands being transported to join ISIS. However, it wasn’t until 2016, when these girls were detained and subjected to an investigation in Afghanistan, that their horrifying tales came to light.
Four females who were part of the 21-person group that joined ISIS with their husbands in 2016 were one of the best-known examples of love jihad. The media has focused a lot of attention on the four females: Sonia Sebastian alias Ayisha, Merrin Jacob alias Mariyam, Nimisha alias Fathima Isa, and Raffaela.

Who is Raffaela?
Raffaela is one of the first ISIS recruits and is notorious for joining ISIS with her husband. She has been in the news because the recently-released Sudipto Sen directorial The Kerala Story loosely described her ordeals.
She was born a Christian Catholic and is a native of Palakkad, Kerala. She married Ijaz Kallukettiya Purayil, a 37-year-old physician from Kasargod. After marriage, she converted to Islam and became a devoted Muslim. Sometime after her marriage, she shifted to Afghanistan with her husband.
There, they joined the Islamic State of Khorasan Province, the Khorasan branch of ISIS, and became terrorists. While fighting against Afghan and US forces, her husband got killed, and Raffaela was jailed in the Nangahar district of Afghanistan in 2019.
However, after the Taliban took over the administration in 2021, she was released from prison. However, the Indian government seems not to be in the mood to extradite them from Afghanistan. While the current whereabouts of Raffaela is unknown, we can assume that she might be living somewhere in the refugee camps of North Syria and Afghanistan.
