45-year-old Rachel Jane Reeves was born in the London Borough of Lewisham on February 13, 1979. She received her education at Beckenham’s comprehensive Cator Park School for Girls. In a competition run by the now-defunct British Women’s Chess Association, she took first place in the British Under-14 girls chess championship while she was in secondary school.

From New College, Oxford, she completed her Bachelor of Arts degree. She has an MSc in economics from the London School of Economics.

Rachel Reeves is married to civil servant Nicholas Joicey, a former speechwriter and private secretary to Gordon Brown. The couple lives in London and Leeds (Bramley). On September 20, 2012, Reeves revealed she was pregnant for the first time. She gave birth to a girl and a son.

Ellie, Rachel’s younger sister, was elected to the new constituency of Lewisham West and East Dulwich in 2024 after serving as the Labour MP for Lewisham West and Penge until then. John Cryer, a Labour MP for Leyton and Wanstead, is Ellie Reeves’ husband.

Rachel Reeves career

Rachel Reeves started working as an economist at the Bank of England after receiving her degree. While working on the central bank’s Japan desk, she examined efforts made by the nation to emerge from economic stagnation during the 1990s.

She met her husband Nicholas Joicey while on a secondment to the UK embassy in Washington, DC. Joicey had previously worked as a speechwriter for then-Chancellor Gordon Brown and as a film critic for newspapers.

For Reeves, however, there was no easy route to Parliament. Traditionally a safe Conservative seat, the former Bromley and Chislehurst had two unsuccessful campaigns.
She relocated to Leeds in 2010 and worked at the Halifax Bank of Scotland before winning the seat of Leeds West as an MP.

She has been charged with “utter hypocrisy” for providing students with reimbursement for their out-of-pocket expenses while they work at her office.

She served on the Commons backbenches under Jeremy Corbyn since she did not agree with his policies. Known as a “Red Tory” by other party members, she called this a “very unpleasant period” in an interview with Nick Robinson of the BBC.
