With his bronze medal in the Men’s 10,000m Race Walk final on Sunday, Sandeep Kumar enhanced India’s impressive performance in athletics at the Commonwealth Games 2022. One day after Priyanka Goswami won silver in the Women’s final, Sandeep won the bronze with a personal best time of 38:49.21.

Sandeep added another gold to India’s collection on the last day of the Commonwealth Games 2022, and the fact that it is another medal, particularly in athletics, would make the country even happier.

Evan Dunfee of Canada (38:36.37), who won the gold, and Declan Tingay of Australia (38:42.33) finished ahead of Kumar, who ran 38:49.21m.

Who Is Sandeep Kumar?

Sandeep Kumar is a famous Indian racewalker. He has recently been in the news because he won the bronze medal in the Men’s 10,000m Race Walk at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

His real name is Sandeep Kumar Poonia. He was born on 1 May 1986 in Mahendragarh, Haryana, India. His mother died when he was 7 years old and his father’s name is Pritam Singh who is a farmer. He belongs to the Jatt family. He has 3 elder siblings.

After attending school, he worked with his father on farms. From an early age, he was interested in sports and used to compete in wrestling at local Dangals.

After passing 12th class in 2006, he joined Indian Army’s Jatt regiment. He was later appointed as a Subedar in the Indian Army. While serving there, he started practising racewalking.

His height is 5 ft 8 inches.

His Career

While serving in the Indian Army, Sandeep Kumar started his career in racewalking by participating in several local competitions in 2008. He participated in the 50-kilometre walk competition at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China.

He also competed in the 2016 Rio Olympics, where his timing of 4:07:55 placed him 35th overall in the 50-kilometre race walk. He competed in the 20-kilometre race walk at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and placed 23rd.

He now holds the 50 km and 20 km race walking national records. He recently won the bronze medal in Commonwealth Games 2022 which were held in Birmingham.
