Ram Baboo, an Indian race walker, has broken the national record in the 35-kilometer race walk category by completing the distance in just 02:29:56 hours at the Dudinska 50 World Athletics Race Walking Tour.

Although Ram missed the World Championships qualifying mark by just 16 seconds, his performance has been remarkable this season. Notably, he broke his own national record set in February (02:31:36 hours) and also qualified for the 2022 Asian Games by meeting the AFI’s set timing.

Among the top 11 athletes at the event, 10 achieved their personal best timings, and Ram Baboo was placed ninth at the 30-minute mark and always remained close to the lead pack.

Who is Ram Baboo?

Ram Baboo is a rising Indian race walker. He has been in the news because he has recently broken the national record in the 35-kilometer race walk category at the Dudinska 50 World Athletics Race Walking Tour.

He was born on March 20, 1999, in Bauar village, near Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh. He was raised in a family of six with a labor background.

For his education, he attended Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya. He is currently 24 years old.

His career

After being inspired by the stellar performances of Indian athletes at the 2012 London Olympics, Ram Baboo chose to start his career in athletics. However, due to the poor economic conditions, he did several gigs before officially starting his career.

He started his athletic career on a nearby 200-meter track. He originally intended to prepare to run marathons but later transitioned to race walking and eventually reached the national level.

Ram Baboo’s outstanding form in race walking has led to him breaking the national record three times in four events since the National Games in 2022.

Last year, he established the then-National Record of 02:36:34 hours to win the Nation Games in Gujarat. During the Indian Race Walking Championships in Ranchi last month, he broke it once again and established a new national record before breaking it once more on Saturday.
