Laura Garcia-Caro, a Spanish race walker who had celebrated before crossing the finish line, appeared upset after narrowly missing out on a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships.

As the women’s 20-kilometer race walk came to an end on Friday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the 29-year-old athlete was smiling and confident she had finished in third place.

But Garcia-Caro’s joy at earning a medal soon gave way to horror as she realized that Lyudmila Olyanovska of Ukraine was closing the distance between them.

Who is Laura Garcia-Caro?


Laura Garcia-Caro is a racewalker who was born on April 16, 1995 in Lepe, Huelva, Spain. The 29-year-old stands 166 cm (5 ft 5 in) tall and weighs 54 kg (119 lb).

She competed in the women’s 20-kilometer walk at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing, China, and finished in 32nd position.

Laura took part in European Junior Championships in Rieti, Italy in 2013 where the athlete finished 5th position. Following that year, she participated in the World Junior Championships in Eugene, United States, finishing fourth and 10th at the European Race Walking Cup in Murcia, Spain.

In 2015, at the European U23 Championships, she concluded at 5th position before ending 32nd St World Championships in Beijing, China.

She then went on to win the Mediterranean U23 Championships in Rades, Tunisia in 2016 followed by her 3rd finish at the European Race Walking Cup of the following year in Podebrady, Czech Republic.

She then took part in European U23 Championships in Poland then World Championships in London, United Kingdom where she finished 9th in 2017. Additionally she finished 14th at World Race Walking Championships in China.

In 2018, at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, Germany, Laura finished the event at 6th. She participated in World Championships held in Doha, Qatar finishing 33rd then in 2021, she came 34th at the Olympic Games held in Sapporo, Japan.

The same year, she finished 14th at the World Race Walking Championships held in Muscat, Oman.

In 2022, Laura was part of the Ibero-American Championships in La Nucia, Spain where she managed to win the game. The same year, she finished 6th at the World Championships in Eugene, United States.
