Sharath Jois was a renowned yoga master who recently passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, in Virginia, USA. His sister, Sharmila Mahesh, and John Bultman, who works as the yoga program manager at University of Virginia confirmed the news about the tragic death.
Cause of death
According to John Bultman, Sharath Jois passed away after suffering a heart attack during a hiking activity. Jois was out hiking near the university’s campus in Charlottesville, alongside 50 students at Humpback Rocks. During the hike, he initially appeared fatigued and sat down on a bench before collapsing. His students made attempts to revive him with CPR but failed to do so. Shortly after emergency medical workers arrived, they pronounced him dead.

Sharath Jois was a renowned yoga teacher and practitioner who was born on September 29, 1971 in Mysore. He was a lineage holder of Ashtanga Yoga, which is the tradition style of yoga that his grandfather K. Pattabhi Jois founded. Sharath was the director of Sharath Yoga Center in Mysuru, India, before his tragic death on November 11, 2024. Sharath was 53 years old during the time of his death.

Career
Sharath Jois started out engaging in yoga at a very young age and after taking on his grandfather’s legacy, he began calling himself as the “Paramaguru,” or “lineage holder,”. Notably, Jois’ grandfather, Krishna Pattabhi Jois, played a major role in popularizing yoga in the 1990s. He even attracted many celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna.

Back in 2007, Jois took over his grandfather’s yoga institute and eventually renamed it as the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in honour of him. Jois’ mother eventually took over the institute’s leadership while Jois went on to establish his own organization. He founded the Sharath Yoga Center, and was a successful businessman who went on frequent teaching tours. Aside from traveling and teaching yoga, he also pursued his passion for nature photography.
