If you've been on the internet long enough, understanding how utterly magnified and terrible the incessant bullying and outright criminality that has been harbored on the new-ish ecosystem of reels and telegram is pretty evident to see. Tragically, Pranshu, a 16-year-old openly queer makeup artist and 10th-grade student from Ujjain, MP, succumbed to suicide on November 21, 2023.
Victim of Cyber Bullying?
The catalyst for this heartbreaking event was the relentless bullying they faced on Instagram for over a week, intensifying after a Diwali Reel showcasing them in a saree went viral. This distressing incident underscores the pervasive issue of online homophobia and its devastating consequences for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
Pranshu’s Diwali Reel garnered over 4000 comments, many of which were homophobic. Despite the prevalence of such hate, many queer creators hesitate to report it due to Instagram’s repeated failure to take swift and effective action.
Who was Pranshu?
As a self-taught makeup artist, Pranshu consistently urged followers to embrace their true selves. In the face of bullies, they responded with grace and flair, earning admiration for their resilience.
However, an assessment by GLAAD revealed that Instagram’s policies contribute to an unsafe environment for LGBTQIA+ individuals, aligning with broader concerns about Meta’s practices. Hate crimes against LGBTQIA+ individuals increased by 70% from 2020 to 2021, highlighting a disturbing trend of growing hostility.
Pranshu’s tragic loss underscores the urgent need to address online homophobia. The LGBTQIA+ community calls for collective care and radical solidarity, urging platforms like Instagram to prioritize user safety and take meaningful steps to combat online harassment.
No Individual should suffer the loss of their life as a result of the destructive impact of hate speech. This serves as a compelling plea for collective action, urging everyone to unite against discrimination and strive towards fostering a digital environment that is inclusive and supportive.
Our deepest condolences to the family, friends, fans and loved-ones of makeup artist Pranshu. May their departed soul rest in peace!
