The new director of IIT-B is Professor Shireesh B Kedare who has been in charge of the Centre of Excellence in Oil, Gas, and Energy at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay since November 2019.

The name of the new IIT-B director Professor Shireesh B. Kedare was revealed on Friday by the central IIT Council, following the appointment of the directors of six IITs on Thursday. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, is the council’s current chairman.

The tenure of professor Subhasis Chaudhari who was the director of IIT Bombay, concluded on April 17. However, the IIT Council asked him to hold onto the position until a new appointment was made. On April 18, 2019, Professor Chaudhuri began his role.

The Union Ministry posted an advertisement and asked applicants with previous teaching and administrative experience ideally under the age of 60 years to apply.

Professor Shireesh B. Kedare was born in 1963 and is aged 61. In the area of energy science and engineering, he is a highly skilled scholar and researcher. He was on the board of governors at IIT Madras and has played a significant role in a number of capacities at IIT Bombay over the years.

Additionally, he was proposed for membership on the Ministry of Education’s Council of IITs.

Professor Shireesh B. Kedare graduated from IIT Bombay with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering in 1985 and a Ph.D. in “Reciprocating Wind Machine” from the same university in 1992.

Professor Shireesh B. Kedare has worked with a number of organisations over the years, including Students for Development, Vivekananda Gramvikas Prakalpa in Latur, the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA) at IIT Bombay, the Society for Advancement of Renewable Materials and Energy Technologies (SARMET) in Mumbai, and the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) in Mumbai up until 2001.

Kedare’s contributions to the design, development, manufacture, installation, testing, and performance evaluation of solar Fresnel concentrating reflectors, especially the ‘Arun’ series are remarkable. These include Arun100, Arun160, and Arun30 versions. These have been successfully tested and implemented in different parts of India.
