Professor Naima Khatoon is the new Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Her appointment has been made by the Ministry of Education after obtaining the consent of Droupadi Murmu who is the visiting President of the university.
With the appointment of Naima Khatoon, AMU has become the third central university to have a woman vice-chancellor. Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit is currently the captain of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Najma Akhtar completed her tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia in 2023.

Naima khatoon has been appointed to the post in the university’s hundred year history. Begum Sultan Jahan became the Chancellor of AMU in 1920, making her the first and only woman to hold the position.

Naima Khatoon began her journey as a lecturer at AMU in August 1988. She gradually rose through the ranks and became an assistant professor in April 1998 and finally a professor in July 2006. She served as professor and chaired the psychology department before being appointed director of the Women’s College in July 2014.
She taught for one academic year at the National University of Rwanda in Central Africa. Professor Naima has also held various administrative positions at AMU – Assistant Principal of Residential Coaching Academy, Assistant Proctor of Indira Gandhi Hall and Abdullah Hall and Provost.
Khatoon’s husband Professor Mohammad Gulrez became the acting Vice-Chancellor of the university after Tariq Mansoor resigned from the post abd Khatoon, a Phd. in Psychology from AMU, joined the same institution in 1988 as a lecturer and continued holding the post until she was promoted to a professor in 2006.
Naima khatoon’s education and achievements
Naima Khatoon has a PhD in Political Psychology. She did her PhD in Delhi at the Center for Research on Developing Societies at AMU. She has presented her research at the University of Louisville (USA), Alba Iulia University (Romania), Chulalongkorn University (Bangkok), and the Hollings Center in both Istanbul (Turkey) and Boston (USA).
Khatoon is also a writer and scholar who has authored, written and edited six books and published various articles in various national and international journals. Her specialties include clinical, health, applied social and spiritual psychology.
Naima Khatoon won the Padma Bhushan Best Girl Award. Professor Naima Khatoon is a well-known name in the field of education. She participated in several national and international conferences and lectured in institutions around the world. Her contributions to the field of psychology are reported to be extensive.
