Rebecca Welch is the first female referee to officiate as a fourth official at the Premier League game. The 39-year-old hails from Washington in Tyne and Wear and was born on 1 December 1983.

Through Durham County FA, she obtained her official credentials. The Premier League official site describes the 39-year-old Northeast England native as a former NHS administrator who studied to be a referee with Durham County FA” and that she started officiating in 2010. In April 2021, when League Two team Port Vale hosted Harrogate, Welch became the first woman to be named referee of an EFL match.
In both 2017 and 2020, Welch replaced the previous referee for the Women’s FA Cup final. After leaving her job as an administrator for the National Health Service, she was promoted to UEFA’s elite tier of female referees in 2020.
Welch already holds the distinction of becoming the first female referee of an English Football League game. She was in charge of the crew of officers on the League Two team that played Harrogate against Port Vale in April 2021.
